How Much Weight Can Be Lost on Intermittent Fasting?

While many people assume that intermittent fasting does not work, a small study of obese humans suggests that it can help them lose weight. According to Varady, the author of the study published in the journal Nutrition and Healthy Aging in June 2018, 23 men and women aged 45 to 64 completed an eight-hour fast, during which they ate only one or two foods per day. The researchers compared the results to a control group and found that those who had followed the program lost weight more quickly than those who had not.

How much weight you lose on intermittent fasting depends on your starting weight, age, and activity level. A recent study with obese type 2 diabetics found that participants lost 1.4% of their original body weight in two weeks, or 2.8 pounds. It was found that participants who did not consume sugary drinks or refined carbs did not lose as much weight as those who ate regular meals. However, a person who follows a well-balanced diet and eats foods designed to increase fat burning may have a smaller weight loss.

A study with overweight individuals found that a person who followed the intermittent fasting plan for eight weeks had an average of 1.4 pounds of weight per week. This rate of weight loss was largely dependent on the type of food eaten during the eating window, as it’s not possible to lose too much in a short period of time.
